I’ll admit, when I started my virtual business, I had no clue what I was doing.
I don’t have a business background, nor did I take any business or entrepreneurship classes in college. Thankfully my business is a virtual franchise, so I had a template to follow. I knew if I remained coachable and followed the system provided by my company I would be successful.
Since starting my virtual business, I’ve become one of the top 2% of my company’s distributors. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been worth it. I’ve learned a few things along the way, including a few of the traits all successful virtual business owners have in common. If you’re an entrepreneur or thinking about become a virtual business owner, I hope you find these tips helpful:
#1 – Successful people know how to say “no.”
I’ll admit, this is a hard one for me. I’m a “yes” person and a people pleaser. I love making people smile and get what they want. I’ve learned saying yes to too many things can be to my detriment, because before you know it…nearly everything you’re doing is helping other people accomplish their goals, but it’s moving you ZERO towards YOUR goals. Over the last few years I’ve learned this lesson the hard way and have committed to saying “no” more often. And you know what? It’s FREEING. The world goes on whether you say yes or no. When you say “yes” to one thing, you’re saying “no” to something else – even though you may not realize it.
#2 – They know where they’re going and begin with the end in mind.
There’s a saying that if you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there. Successful virtual business owners know what they want to accomplish before they begin and reverse engineer their goals to make the end desire a reality.
#3 – They are ethical.
This is a pretty obvious trait. I’ve found that what goes around comes around…so if you want good things and people to come your way, do the right thing.
#4 – They show appreciation.
I started a gratitude journal last year and it’s one of the smartest things I’ve ever done. It’s easy to get caught up in life and focus on the negative situations we encounter on a daily basis. When we choose to focus on the positive and show appreciation, that mindset actually triggers more positive things to occur. It encourages us to keep looking for the positive things and be intentional with our mindset – which summons more of what we’re looking for into our lives.
#5 – They are flexible.
Success doesn’t come from perfection. It comes from repeated failures. Taking action, stumbling, overcoming that obstacle, and adapting to the challenge. One of my favorite quotes from Thomas Edison is “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” I love that! Learning from trenches and staying flexible is key for any virtual business owner.
These five traits are critical for anyone who wants success in his or her life, so I hope you find these useful. If you know someone who would find value in them, please consider giving them a share. I’ll see you on my next post!
