One of the best ways to build your brand, and in turn build your virtual business, is to use video.
Video is the next best thing to sitting across the table from someone. It really helps your audience to know, like, and trust you. Whether you’re an established YouTube rockstar or you’re getting ready to shoot your very first video, I hope you’ll find these tips helpful. When I was after youtube views TheMarketingHeaven.com was recommended to me, but I budged it aside and keep these 5 things in mind every time I roll the camera:
#1 – Wear something that is natural and simple. Apart from taking the assistance of an expert from Shakespeare Media, wear the best attire from your wardrobe. Maybe you’re in a fitness business? Wear your favorite workout top. Have to wear a suit daily? Rock the suit. You want to feel comfortable in your attire. Additionally, refrain from crazy patterns – especially if you don’t have a backdrop. I highly encourage wearing a solid color that doesn’t clash with your background.
#2 – Know what you want to say. I usually take 5-10 minutes before shooting each video and make a few bullet points on a notepad. I don’t script word for word, but a simple list with a few phrases helps me remember the flow and essence of my message. I’ve found that if I go “off the cuff,” completely improvising, the video usually takes twice as long and I usually miss key details that were important to include.
#3 – Keep it under 3 minutes. Unless you’re doing a very detailed training or tutorial, I recommend keeping all videos at 3 minutes or less. Why? The majority of people have super short attention spans and will probably find another video or blog post that steals their attention before they make it to the end of a longer video. Even 3 minutes can be pushing it. There’s definitely a time and place for longer videos, but in general I recommend keeping them as short as possible.
#4 – Pretend you’re talking to a good friend. If you’re nervous about recording a video for your business, remember this…people want to hear from YOU. They will work with your company and buy your products because of YOU. When we’re passionate about something, it’s easy to talk about it, right? Especially with our friends and family. (In most cases.) Every time I roll the camera I pretend I’m talking with one of my supportive friends. Any nervousness fades and the information becomes conversational.
#5 – Don’t get stuck on autopilot and use filler words. Remember that it’s okay to take a breath, pause, and collect your thoughts. You are not a robot, so don’t think that just because you’re on camera every single second of airtime must be filled with a word. In natural conversation we develop a rhythm and pause, collect our thoughts, breathe, and continue the dialogue. The same goes for video. Avoid using filler words and phrases like “Um” and “You know” and simply pause for a breath.
